After a student posted he would "be on a shooting rampage" on the Internet, the 19-year-old has been suspended from the campus and placed in psychiatric care, University Police Chief David Mitchell said.
Police said the Oakland Hall resident — Alexander Song, of Fulton, Md. — posted the following message on either Reddit.com or Omegle.com (a one-on-one anonymous text or video chat site) yesterday: "I will be on a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus," "hopefully I kill enough people to make it to national news," and "stay away from the Mall tomorrow at 1:30."
University Police received a phone call detailing the posted message and found him today around 10 a.m. today near Cumberland Hall, according to University Police spokesman Capt. Marc Limansky.Roberto Cavalli Sunglasses men
Song will be placed in psychiatric care and face criminal charges for disturbing the orderly conduct of this university, which is punishable by a fine of up to $2,500 or up to six months of imprisonment, Mitchell said. Police have not found any weapons, he added. He has not been arrested yet, but police have obtained a warrant for his arrest.
Police worked from 10 p.m. Saturday through the night to identify and confirm that Song had intentions to cause bodily harm to either himself or others, Mitchell said.
Police heard from, "a variety of people who read online," that Song was a threat, Mitchell added.Versace Sunglasses men
"The dialogue that he put out there caused us to think that time was of the essence," Mitchell said. "We called in every detective. It was a spider web of information that we have to work backwards from."
Mitchell said the investigation is ongoing. Limansky declined to say if Song confirmed to police his intentions of going through with his posts.
"We take any threat seriously. After Virginia Tech and other shootings, whether they're high schools or universities, you can't say ‘maybe they're just joking,'" Limansky said. "We take this seriously, and we'll do whatever we need to do to identify the person. We can't let those go."
